Weighing in with it’s newest offerings at 202 volumes, the Library of America series, which began compiling American authors in 1979 is still going strong. Latest offerings from Lafcadio Hearn, Katherine Anne Porter and John Cheever.
The books, which tend to run to about 1,000 pages each, are of manageable size, though the thin paper can at times prove something of an annoyance. There are no critical introductions. Instead, each volume has a detailed chronology of the author’s life, which can be quite fascinating.
